"Around
the country, there are a handful of contemporary Native American
performers with amazing ideas and amazing sounds.
In the past, Native music has always been placed in the dusty
"folk-ways" corners for study in Musicology courses.
Rarely do you see or hear what is on the contemporary
side.
The first I remember was Buffy St Marie,
Red Bone, XIT with lyrics for the world to understand. And
recently, it has been flute music with ambient rhythms, and the
soaring success of New Age created a modest market. But
that is without English lyrics, so it seems to be non-threatening...
as Native People in America we live in an English speaking world,
and for many we also live in our Native speaking villages, For
most of us, our language is not written and that's the way we
want it- for good reason. For some,our tongue
has been our first language. We have lived in
two worlds and our music and stories of America need to be heard.
some radio stations have taken the challenge on the stories, playing
them for people who want to listen to the voiceof our original
tribes. We are here because we have not
been erased. Singers, drummers, dancers,
rockers, new agers, bluesmen, rappers, this is our voice, these
are our stories. Never give in, never give
up. This is America, this is our country. Mirabal,
the "Alter-Native" album is dediated to all Native American
performers, form the professionals to the garage and underground,
just to do it. Keep on reading the truth,
writing the truth, singing the truth. May our songs always be
heard."
