Kachinasand
Totems
Kachinas
have a rich and varied history beyond the fact that they
are just wooden carved dolls for sale in Indian stores.
Please click on the thumbnails below for the enlarged images
of these traditionally hand-crafted Native American Kachina
figures.
The original Kachinas were supernatural beings and spirits.These mainly benevolent entities once lived among
the Indian peoples and taught them basic living skills for
well-being.
These skills included:
How
to hunt and make tools and other artefacts;
How
to live in harmony with nature so as to bring rain and fertility
to the ground;
How
to heal sickness and measure out discipline;
The
art of offering spiritual gratitude.
When these original Kachinas left the pueblos, they imported
their gifts to the people who still carry out heir traditions.At the time a pueblo dancer assumes the masks
and costumes of those ‘ancestral beings’, he imbues the
power and characteristics of the particular Kachina, but
he is not looked upon as a god, but merely as a symbol of
one of the original kachinas.
